In 1994 I began designing websites for myself and non-profit organisations, in 1998 I started working as a freelance web developer.
Please note that some sites listed will have been modified, moved or closed since I worked on them.
Website Redesign, Museum Victoria http://www.museum.vic.gov.au/
The Museum Victoria website was given a new graphic design and backend in October 2000. The Resource Discovery Framework, What's on and Hot Topics supplied dynamic content. The graphic design (supplied by an external firm) was further modified in February 2001, under my guidance. Some of my contributions to this process were:
I continually collected feedback on the functionality and branding of the existing design from a variety of sources including webmaster email, web stats and logs, MV staff, and external users. I conducted workshops with a variety of stakeholders, content producers and end users, produced and collated surveys and used the feedback sources above to design a new architecture and produce a new design brief.
InfoZone, Museum Victoria http://infozone.museum.vic.gov.au/
I produced all HTML, CSS, and Javascript. I adapted and optimised all graphics from supplied psd's or content sources.
I wrote and implemented all the backend programming, including searches, dynamic pages, IP address detection and range tests, and database integration.
You can read more about my work on this site in the 'Web Applications' section, particularly under 'Resource Discovery Framework', the internal name for a collection of content sources, databases and interfaces.
Australia's Federation, Museum Victoria http://www.museum.vic.gov.au/federation/
I optimised and enhanced the original graphics, wrote all HTML, and designed and implemented Flash multimedia features such as image slideshows and screensavers.
I updated the existing template design for better compatibility with W3C standards and the most common browsers. I introduced a second level navigation pattern.
Golden Mile, Museum Victoria, http://www.museum.vic.gov.au/goldenmile/
This was a one-page site for use as a link to the official site. The original design was adapted by a member of my team from a brochure design. I used this site to develop a prototype black-band top banner for use on all MV project sites.
This is a very rare example of a 'fixed' or 'ice' layout in my work. My usual approach is to design pages that resize appropriately for the users' screens.
Crustacea, Museum Victoria (design not live, delays with content checking)
I produced all the graphic design for this site. I also designed the user interface and a consistent navigation scheme. This design solved problems such as different levels of detail and amounts of text in the content. I wrote all HTML and Javascript, and optimised the layout graphics and original content graphics for this site.
Other MV sites I worked on included Collections, Scienceworks (including modification and bug fixes on HTML and layouts provided by an external company and sub-domain creation), Sunshine Harvester (including modification and bug fixes on ASP code provided by an external company and sub-domain creation), Flying Colours, (including LDAP authentication), Victoria Spiders (volunteer co-ordination and technical guidance), Conferences, themed and keyword searches, Immigration Museum (including updates to layouts and databases), Melbourne Museum (including information architecture), Melbourne Planetarium, and a special Media site (form validation, ASP fixes to externally-supplied code and useability fixes).
Melbourne International Film Festival, Vicnet http://www.melbournefilmfestival.com.au/1999/ (Archive. Some of the code and images were modified after my work, specifically the non-transparent gifs.)
I produced all original graphics and HTML, including layouts for dynamically generated pages. I adapted the graphic design from the printed program and brochures.
I also wrote the successful tender for this project after meetings with the client.
Legal Aid, Vicnet http://www.legalaid.vic.gov.au/ (redesigned since)
I designed a layout and navigation system to link their Annual Report with an existing site design.
InfoWest, Vicnet. Was http://infowest.maribyrnong.vic.gov.au/.
I adapted the supplied graphic design for the web. I did a lot of work to optimise the actual and apparent download speed for this site, especially the graphic-intensive front page. Methods I used included using stacking tables instead of nesting to reduce rendering time and allow parts of the page to appear as they were loaded, using table background colours instead of gifs, and chopping images into areas of gifs and jpegs to allow me to apply the best optimisation method for each section.
I designed forms and result pages for several different dynamic pages. I wrote Javascript rollovers. This was a multilingual site (including multibyte languages).
Holden Suburban, Freelance. Was http://www.holden.com.au/suburban.
I wrote Javascripts to detect visitor browser versions and operating system and redirect appropriately, image rollovers, 'go' menus, and an interactive 'car colour picker'. I wrote CGI forms, and integrated audio and video elements. I was also responsible for graphics creation and compression.
ReLoaded, Volunteer site
This site was produced for the Maverick Arts Festival and is designed to be a multi-contributor and multimedia response to Christos Tsolkias' novel "Loaded" (later filmed as "Head On").
My work on this site
included graphic design, site architecture and navigation, HTML,
Javascript (random links, window status, and image rollovers),
animated gifs, cgi forms (weighted searches and dynamic page
generation), image maps and the integration of sound, animation
and movie files. This site provided several different metaphors for navigating through the same content. Stories could be accessed by location, by author, or chronologically.
